How to Choose the Right Billet Trailer Hitch Cover (Size, Design, and Material)

Posted by William Ribolzi on

Your trailer hitch cover does more than protect the receiver—it’s a billboard for your truck, trade, branch, or cause. At HMC Billet, we CNC machine every cover from solid 6061 aluminum right here in the USA, so it outlasts plastic imported junk and looks sharp for years. Here’s how to pick the perfect one.

Step 1: Match Your Receiver Size

Most trucks and SUVs use a 2-inch receiver, which is the standard size hitch cover.
We manufacture 1-1/2” receivers for cars and small SUVs.

Some heavy-duty rigs (F250, F350, 2500 and 3500) take 2.5-inch or 3” receivers. We manufacture those as well.

Measure the inside dimension of the receiver or check your owner’s manual to confirm.

Step 2: Choose the size and style of your hitch cover.

We manufacture 4” & 5” round and 3”x5” & 4”x6” rectangular hitch covers. Choose a shape that matches your design. For full size trucks we recommend the larger 5” round and 4”x6” hitch covers. The smaller sizes fit well on most small vehicles and SUVs. But it just depends on how big a statement you want to make on your vehicle.

The laser engraved hitch covers are anodized black and the design have gray tones . The full color hitch covers are UV printed on powder coated aluminum. Then we spray three coats of an automotive clear coat to seal and protect the color design.

Step 3: Go for Billet Aluminum Over Plastic

Cheap plastic or rubber covers fade, crack, and break off in summer heat or winter cold. Billet aluminum starts as a solid block of 6061 alloy, CNC machined to precise specs, then anodized or powder coated for corrosion resistance and a long lasting kick ass hitch cover.
Our covers weigh more, feel premium, and hold up on job sites, off-road trails, or daily commutes—perfect for tradesmen, first responders, vets, or anyone who demands gear that lasts.

Step 3: Choose the Design and Finish

Stock designs cover the basics: American flags, Gadsden “Don’t Tread On Me,” military branches, state outlines, Patriots, hunters, tradesman, and first responder badges.

Laser engraving for a crisp, permanent look.
Want full-color? We UV print logos, photos, or art that resists fading. Popular picks include club emblems, business logos, and unit crests—check our Most Popular collection for ideas.

Step 4: Stock vs Custom

Grab a stock design if you want it fast from inventory (flags, states, branches). Go custom for one-offs like your company logo, race team, or family ranch brand—send us a vector file, and we’ll engrave or print it on any size. We will send you a proof to approve before we make it.
Customs take a bit longer but ship with the same lifetime durability guarantee.
